New Catalyx Landfill Gas Project Makes Nanofibers from Thin Air

Catalyx Nanotech, Inc. has started a pilot project to convert landfill gas to elemental carbon and hydrogen.

The concept sounds like spinning fabric out of thin air, but the science is rock solid.  Catalyx Nanotech, Inc., a relatively new player in the nanomaterials market, has completed its pilot project to manufacture nanofibers from landfill gas, using a patented cracking process to break down methane into soot free elemental carbon and hydrogen.  Based on Catalyx’s success with a similar production facility in Canada, it appears that yet another way to recycle old landfills is right around the corner.

This hydrosphere is handy for people who would like to grow green vegetation but would have a hard time finding a place for their potted plants. Although it is not a requirement to live in the city or in an apartment to own one, this planter can allow you to add green to your living environment while also acting as an elegant “green” gadget and conversation starter.

Bel-Air Domestic Spacecraft

This air purifier makes your plants ‘more intelligent.’ The Bel-Air Domestic Spacecraft inhales polluted air and filters it through three natural filters (the plant leaves, its roots, and a humid bath) before releasing purified air back into your living space. This project was first researched by NASA for the efficiency of plants at absorbing and eliminating pollutants in aircraft. The domestic spacecraft runs off of AC power for the white LED lights, so you can have clean air anywhere you decide to put it.

The Grobal Self-Watering Planters (left) are perfect for people who may not have the greenest of thumbs. You fill up the water chamber and it automatically adds water to the plant’s soil so you will never over-water or under-water your plant again. You plug the USB into your computer and the USB power source controls the artificial light above the plant to help grow the plant in a scientific manner. It comes with soil and marigold seeds. It also comes with software to monitor the growth rate, a calendar, wallpaper and bookmark settings. Even with all the technology included with this gadget, you still need to remember to physically water your plant or it will die. Your software will remind you though when the plant is thirsty while your plant filters the CO2 around you. If you are tech savvy and love the environment too, then this little greenhouse may be for you.

The in-ground sensor takes advantage of the same technology that NASA uses on the Mars Phoenix mission to measure the Martian soil. The sensors read and analyze growing conditions in the spots where you “plant” it. For years and years, humans considered themselves the one and only makers of tools. Homo sapien literally means “wise man” because we were so intelligent that it was us humans, and us humans alone, who could even have the brain capacity to create a tool. It was considered the key feature of the genus Homo.

Well, that was until people actually decided to carefully look at other animal’s social behavior. It was not until the mid to late 1900’s that people realized “oops us humans are not the only ones to use tools.” Primatologists discovered Chimpanzees creating tools for fishing termites out of their mounds, and stones for crushing nuts from their hard shell. Other researchers discovered that gorillas make beds from foliage, as well as sponges out of chewed up leaves.

Israeli company Atlantium Develops Pathogen Water Purification System Without Chemicals

And it’s not just the health and hospitality industry that wants to figure out a way to purify their water without resorting to chemicals. Other industries, including the food and beverage, dairy, aquaculture and municipal drinking water providers need to ensure that the water they use contain no micro-organisms or pathogens of any kind. A company based in Israel, Atlantium has developed what may be one of the first industrial-grade solutions to water micro-organism purification without chemicals.

Bluewater Bio Makes Water from Sewage with New HYBACS System

Bluewater Bio\'s new HYBACS system removes pollutants from sewage treatment plant effluent.Sewage treatment plant effluent may finally get its Cinderella moment, thanks to a new process called HYBACS developed by Bluewater Bio International. Up to now, the waste water from sewage plants has been shunted aside for disposal, typically into a nearby waterway.  HYBACS transforms it into a reusable water resource, by improving the removal of nitrogen, phosphorus and other pollutants.  Bluewater Bio has won a grant from the Spanish Environment Ministry to conduct a pilot test of the technology at a treatment plant near Madrid.  If it proves successful, sewage treatment plant effluent could get a new life - and new respect for its role in a sustainable future.

The Tipping Point for Green Jobs: Johns Manville Dives Into Solar Roof Market

Johns Manville partners with Energy Conversion Devices to Market CIGS Thin Film Solar Building materials giant Johns Manville, a Berkshire Hathaway company once best known for its asbestos shingles, has just announced that it is entering  the solar roof market in a big way.  The company will buy thin film solar laminates made by Michigan-based United Solar Ovonic, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices.  United Solar has already started bringing green jobs into Michigan, and the Johns Manville connection could mean that more expansion is in store.

The “green movement” is gaining some steam in the general public, and hey I am all for it.  As long as it doesn’t become a fad that fades away into a footnote like slap bracelets and Crocks. The Apple iPhone is the hottest smart phone going today, and with over 65,000 applications in the iTunes App Store and counting, the usefulness of this pocket device goes up all the time. This can only mean that there will be green apps on the iPhone, and of course there will be some clunkers. With all these apps floating around there must be some gems as well. I’ll give some apps a try and tell you what I think, so you, my loyal reader, doesn’t have to.

Eco-Docks Designed to Float in NYC’s Nasty Rivers
