Poor Obama: not only does he have to contend with Blue Dogs, but now it seems he is being poisoned by lead found in the
People’s Garden at the White House.
In truth, the levels, while not ideal, are far from unusual or unsafe for an
urban garden. The
Guardian states:
The soil in the garden had lead concentrations of 93 parts per millio...Read the full story on TreeHugger

A young diver in China owes her life to a Beluga Whale, like the one pictured above. Belugas have an affinity for humans, but Mila the whale took the relationship to a new level at the Polar Land Aquarium in Harbin, North East China. Yang Yun was competing in a free-dive competition there, hoping to land a job training whales. As one of seven finalists, Yang intended to dive as deep as she could in the icy water of the aquarium's tanks without any diving gear. As she ran out of breath and prepared to resurface, leg cramps prevented her ascent.
The young woma...

A
recent essay in YaleGlobal online by Jamie Chamie explores the controversial c
onnection between immigration and overpopulation—a subject that is constantly framed morally or economically, but rarely environmentally. The essay states:
They [the White House] concluded that there is hardly any problem confronting America whose solution would be easier with a larger population. Moving toward population stabiliz...Read the full story on TreeHugger

To be honest, I didn’t really know what I was getting into when I signed up to cover the
Wanderlust Festival. Billed as part
yoga retreat and part indie rock festival, sure I’d seen the ads in the paper, but what did that really mean? Would people really be able to focus and center themselves with guitars wailing in the background? Would hipsters really be able to fit in at a place ...

I have to say that usually when I hear about a
solar-powered boat I'm a bit skeptical --
often the solar power is just used for lighting or other equipment and not propulsion -- but not so with Kong Kong's four new solar-powered ferries. Solar power will supply three-quarters of their power, with liquid petroleum gas supplying the remainder.

Talk about a "butterfly flaps its wings" scenario. Scientists Kakani Katija and John Dabiri of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena have worked out just how
jellyfish swim, and propose that the way jellyfish and other swimmers move through the water could have as big an impact on mixing up the oceans' waters as tides and wind, which means they're an important part of determining the temperatures of the seas. ...

You usually picture song birds as being as beautiful in plumage as they are in their sound. But a newly discovered song bird species may flip that notion on its head, thanks to its bald head, a characteristic that makes it completely unique for its type. ...
