The Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation (eTec), a subsidiary of ECOtality, Inc. and Nissan North America win a $99.8M grant from the Department of Energy to support the largest deployment of electrical vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure in U.S. history.

The project will use Nissan’s LEAF, an early stage zero-emission EV to study and develop the logistics and necessary scale behind the implementation of a national charging infrastructure, that will in turn, support large-scale EV deployment. Initial stages of the project include the deployment of 5,000 EVs and EV charging stations in Arizona, California, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. Don Karner, President of eTec, sums up the industry e-coup:

By studying lessons learned from electric vehicle operations and the infrastructure supporting these first 5,000 vehicles, the Project enables the streamlined deployment of the next 5,000,000 electric vehicles…Nissan and over 40 government and industry partners, will enable this Project to successfully pave the way for electric transportation nationwide.

Nissan’s EV revolution now has a face — you may call it LEAF. Available for purchase in late 2010.

You’ve got to hand it to Nissan: they’ve been burning the midnight oil with their EV information blitz recently. I’m sure there are many blurry eyed and bedazzled marketing and engineering folks behind the Nissan EV scenes right now who are starting to wonder if they get paid enough.

BMW’s new City EV is to be a four seater that is even shorter than the other i-Project BMW offering; the electric Mini Cooper. That’s hard to imagine from this picture; this car looks more sedan sized. Electricity will be stored in a water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that is expected to provide a 100-mile range.

Compared with most companies aiming at 2010 electric vehicle deliveries (at least in their press releases!) 2012 is a comparatively sedate delivery schedule.

This is despite having produced a series of perfectly functional BMW electric cars going way back…that never made it to mass production. For the 1972 Olympic games held in Munich, for example - BMW provided a fleet of bright orange electric cars:
