An outline of the bill, hand-scribbled by Rep. Oberstar. (image via Blueprint America)
America’s “happy motoring” days are over; now is the time for a “transformational” transportation policy. On this point, the Obama Administration and Representative Jim Oberstar agree.
However, while the Administration seems content to Read the full story on TreeHugger

Why didn’t Congress and the Obama administration see this coming? With just $1 billion, the program was never going to last until November.

It’s only been a short while that you could actually participate in the Cash for Clunkers program — four days in fact — but response was so overwhelming that the program has already depleted its $1 billion budget, Raw Story reports:

Okay, I’m sick of the climate bill, too. But when I stumbled upon this little ditty, courtesy of Auto Tune the News, I had to share it (though maybe you’ve heard it already). I mean, it’s Pelosi, Michelle Bachmann, and House Minority Leader John Boehner ’singing’ about the climate bill. And it’s hilarious….Read the full story on TreeHugger

Guess it pays to be the biggest oil company in the world–even though their profits are at the lowest they’ve been in six years, Exxon still managed to spend more money on lobbying efforts for the climate bill than the entire clean energy industry combined. …Read the full story on TreeHugger

One criticism/fear of instituting a cap and trade program to reduce carbon emissions is that once Wall Street gets its fingers into it the whole thing is just going to run amok with speculation, derivatives and all the same sorts of things that led to the recent banking meltdown. Well, though the Senate’s climate bill hasn’t even been written yet, Read the full story on TreeHugger

Rep. Henry Waxman is the chair of the Energy and Commerce
Committee and coauthor of the ACES bill passed by the House in June.
Naturally, political observers are curious about his thoughts on the
fight to pass climate/energy legislation this year, but in media
interviews he tends to be careful, measured, and fairly abstract. He
doesn’t do his work in public.
It turns out, however, that Waxman has offered a fairly clear guide
to his thinking, and even told us where to find it: it’s in chapter
five of his new book, The Waxman Report: How Congress Really Works.

If there’s anything more appalling than massive man-caused environmental catastrophes, it’s the ensuing reports on how each one could have been (often rather easily) prevented. In the case of the 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash that spilled out across Tennessee, it turns out the Tennessee Valley Authority had been warned of that exact scenario taking place–by its own employees, and as early as 1985. Oh, and along with this revelation comes the…Read the full story on TreeHugger
